Texas Hold 'Em Poker

  • A game usually consists of 9 to 11 players.
  • Bets are paid into the pot before the first card is dealt. These are referred to as big blind (dealer right) and little blind (dealer left) and are pre-set amounts.
  • Starting from the dealer's left hand side, two cards are dealt face down to every player, one at a time.
  • The betting round begins with each player having 3 options: a) matching or calling the big blind (ie. existing bet), b) folding their hand (if they don't like their cards), or c) putting more money into the pot or raising the bet.
  • A decision is made on what to bet (if anything) by each player.
  • If any player raises the bet, each player must then call the new amount.
  • If a player raises the bet, then they may not do so again unless they are re-raised.
  • If the amount is not raised by any player, then the players may check.
  • The flop is a series of shared community cards that all players can use in conjunction with their own 2 cards in order to make the best possible combination.
  • The flop begins by the dealer burning a card (putting it to one side and not using it in play), dealing 3 cards face down and turning them over simultaneously.
  • The betting round begins again, as previously described.
  • The dealer burns another card and deals a fourth (shared) card, referred to as the turn. Another round of betting commences.
  • The dealer burns a fifth and final card, referred to as the river. A final round of betting takes place and the best hand ultimately wins.

Blackjack

  • The aim of blackjack is to achieve a total card value that is greater than the dealer's but is still less than or equal to 21.
  • Each player around the table is dealt a card, face up.
  • The dealer also deals themselves a card but this is face down.
  • A second card is dealt to each player in the same fashion.
  • Each player must then decide whether or not to accept further cards from the dealer.
  • Once all hands have been completed, the dealer will draw cards to complete their own hand.
  • If a player's total is higher than the dealer's but under 21, the player wins.
  • If a dealer goes bust (over 21), the players win.
  • If the total is the same as the dealers, a stand-off is declared and there is no winner.
  • Jacks, Queens and Kings count as 10 points and an Ace can count as either 1 or 11 points.

Roulette

  • An American roulette wheel has 38 slots including 2 zeros.
  • Players place a bet on any of these numbers.
  • Once all bets have been placed, the croupier spins the wheel and releases the ball.
  • Just prior to the ball dropping into one of the slots, the croupier call "no more bets" and no-one may place any further bets until the ball lands on a slot.
  • A dolly is placed on the winning number on the roulette table.
  • The winner is player whose number comes up.
  • Further bets can be placed only when the winners have been paid and the losing bets have been cleared from the table.

Craps

  • The player rolling the dice is referred to as the shooter.
  • Each player places a bet on the numbers that may or may not come up. This must be done before the dice is rolled.
  • Prior to the dice first being rolled, players make pass line bets.
  • The shooter's first roll of the dice is referred to as the come out roll.
  • If the come out roll is 7 or 11, then these bets are instant winners.
  • If the come out roll is 2, 3 or 12, then these bets are instant losers.
  • The remaining numbers (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10) are referred to as the point.
  • If the shooter rolls the point, then they must continue rolling until the point or the number 7 come up again.
  • If the point comes up before the 7, then all pass line bets win.
  • If the 7 comes up before the point, then all pass line bets lose.

Two-Up

  • Any number of players can play two-up.
  • A circle is drawn on the floor which must be at least 20 feet in diameter.
  • A boxer runs the game and controls the bets which are laid on the outcome of the spin.
  • The boxer calls "come in spinner" and the spinner enters the ring from between the players.
  • The spinner's aim is to spin heads 3 times ("headed them") in order to collect the winnings.
  • Once this is done, the spinner can either bet or retire.
  • The spinner places 2 coins - one head up, one tail down - on to the kip, which is a flat piece of wood used to toss the coins.
  • The coins must be spun to 1 metre above the spinner's head.
  • A spin result of one head and one tail is referred to as "oned them" and is classed as a 'no throw'. The spinner then continues with the toss until a result is achieved.
  • A spin result of 2 tails ("tailed them") is classed as a loss for the spinner.
  • The spinner also loses if odds are thrown 5 times in a row.
